With all this anticipation building-up over the last two weeks, I am glad to announce that JuJu (my oldest cousin named Julia) is getting married this Saturday. Tonight was the rehearsal, and of course it was heart-felt, hilarious and full of happiness – all at the same time.
I love her like a sister, and would watch out for her no matter what the circumstances. Funnily enough, besides my big brother, she was my first friend as a baby. She’s one year older than me (well, technically only three months older) and a whole lot of different.
A teacher at heart (and literally in an elementary classroom), she has always been the nurturing one. Not only is she a natural home maker, but also a great cook and baker. Very girly, yet independent and strong. She knows what she wants and goes after it. Okay, maybe we’re more alike then I automatically thought.
Often, she doesn’t ask for much, but a couple of years ago when she needed a place to live in Ottawa while completing her Bachelors of Education – I welcomed her into my 115 Powell Apartment. There was no way she could move into a place located anywhere else in that city without me. It was my turn to help her feel comfortable in a new home and take care of her a little.
Thank gawd she didn’t give up on me after I bit her arm as a toddler – I bit her so hard it left behind a scar that we can still see to this day! Don’t worry, I wasn’t a complete animal. I was just jealous that Matthew (my brother) would play with JuJu instead of me. Now, I can honestly say that it has been a privilege to be part of her wedding party along with all of our first cousins and her best friend Ashley.
I can’t wait to see JuJu in her gown and walking down the aisle towards the love of her life. To be honest, I’m still kind of in shock after seeing her and Silvio standing up by the altar tonight. It’s just so exciting, her being the first wedding in our immediate family, and all!
