It began to break during my Masters, and I couldn’t bare to let it go.
My brown Volcom backpack.
I remember being in high school and not knowing what was cool or trendy in grade nine. (My high school girl friends can vouch for that.) My mom bought me a red, waterproof Roots backpack. I hated it. A big square box. It wasn’t until I ventured out into the city with my friend Val – during grade 10 – to shop that I bought my Volcom backpack. It was about $60-$70 dollars, but I remember thinking it was an investment that I’d have forever.
If the equivalent of forever is about 7 years, then I was right. That brown Volcom backpack, with baby blue insignia, made it through high school, into University at Carleton, until the second year of my Masters. It even crossed the border with me once or twice, and made an appearance in Vancouver, plus on the Greyhound buses.
Then, the main zipper finally gave, and the stitching began to break. Too expensive to replace the zipper, I was in a dilemma. Backpack-less.
I’d seen Hershcel backpacks before, but hadn’t put much thought into owning one…until I saw the bright orange one.
Orange, with a navy blue base and thick gold zippers, I was sold. I love plain backpacks, so without a bunch of compartments or unnecessary pockets. Not even a laptop holder or insulation is necessary to me. I like the plain of the plain.
Original style, Herschel bags aren’t even expensive! $55 before tax, and $5 dollars cheaper than their competing brand. It took me awhile to commit to purchasing though. I had just returned from Cuba and it would have been the perfect carry on if I had parted with my brown Volcom sooner, but I hadn’t. Plus, my winter jacket is the same construction-worker-pylon orange.
Yesterday, I committed, and I’m so pleased that I did! What a fantastic product. If you’ve never heard of Herschel before, or are unfamiliar with their trendy style, all you need to know is that they’re a CANADIAN company!

Thankfully, I am good with the upkeep of my backpacks, so here is to another 7 years with my new Herschel. You won’t miss me walking down the street with this hunter orange beauty!
